NDIS Guidelines For Support While Travelling on a Supported Holiday.

If you choose to use NDIS for support hours, we have included some information below.

  • The provider delivers ONLY 04_Community Participation support during the trip, not 01 for Respite or any accommodation AT ALL.
  • The support can be claimed under Item 04, which is appropriate for social and recreational activities if it meets your  plan goals.
  • The provider is NDIS registered, and the support workers are qualified.

This setup is compliant with NDIS guidelines, assuming the support was:

  • Pre-agreed in the Service Agreement
  • The provider is NDIS registered
  • Delivered face-to-face
  • Aligned with  NDIS goals

For example

Goal : I would like to build skills to be able to save money and go on the holiday of my choice.\

– Goal : I would like to maintain and increase my social participation and have assistance when dealing with people who do not know me.

NDIS Guideline: Claiming Community Participation Support (Item 04) During Overseas Travel

Support Item Used: 04_104_0125_6_1 – Access Community Social and Recreational Activities (Weekday Daytime)

  • This item falls under Core Supports – Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation.
  • It covers support provided by a Disability Support Worker to help participants engage in community, social, and recreational activities.
  • The support can be delivered in various settings, including during travel, as long as it aligns with the participant’s goals and is considered reasonable and necessary.

Use of NDIS Supports While Overseas

NDIS allows participants to use their plan overseas under certain conditions:

  • Duration: Up to 6 weeks of overseas travel is permitted without affecting the plan. Longer stays require NDIA approval.
  • Supports Funded: Only essential disability-related supports are funded, such as:
    • Support worker assistance (same personal care and assistance you get at home)
    • Personal care (daily living needs don’t stop during holidays)
    • Equipment hire
    • Community participation activities (if aligned with goals)
  • Provider Requirements: If the provider is NDIS-registered and the support workers are certified and trained in Australia, the support can be claimed as usual, provided it meets NDIS criteria.

Travel and Accommodation Expenses

  • Participant Responsibility: Flights, accommodation, and general travel expenses arenot funded by NDIS unless they are directly related to the delivery of disability support (e.g., support worker’s travel costs). This includes planes, trains, buses, taxis, rental cars, and petrol. Even if you need special seating or accessible transport, you pay for it. The NDIS sees this as a normal travel cost that everyone pays.
  • Support Worker Costs: If a support worker accompanies the participant and provides disability-related support, their time and travel may be claimed under the relevant support item, provided:
    • It is pre-agreed in the Service Agreement
    • It complies with NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits
